The Math Department at Elon is happy to announce that it's "Math for Elementary and Middle Grades Education" course, MTH 210, has been officially designated as a service learning course beginning in the Winter 2007 term. Professor Janice Richardson and Professor Lisa Beuerle, both professors of mathematics at Elon, worked together on the project under the guidance of Pam Kaiser. Students enrolled in the course will now work in teams to run a phone homework hotline. The hotline will tentatively be open Sunday through Thursday from 6-8pm. The teacher candidates in MTH 210 will have the opportunity to help students and parents in the local community with math questions from the K-8 curriculum. The homework hotline has been available to grades 9-12 students through a service learning project in EDU 422 during the 2005 and 2006 fall semesters. During the winter term of 2007, Math 210 students continued their work with the middle school and secondary school students in the Alamance Burlington School System.
