Awards
- Certificates will be presented to the top scorer on each team.
- Certificates of special merit will be presented to all contestants qualifying for the NCCTM state contest (top 8% of all participants with a minimum of NINE persons). This has changed since last year.
- Plaques will be presented to the three (3) top scoring individuals.
- Plaques and certificates will be presented to the three (3) top scoring teams. A team is defined as group of at least 4 but no more than 6 students from the same accredited North Carolina school. There may not be more than 6 competitors for any one school.
The highest qualifying individuals are eligible for an academic scholarship at Elon University. It is hoped that the certificates of merit could be officially presented to each student on an awards day at his/her school.
The Test
The test will be a Comprehensive Test. It will cover high school mathematics topics, mathematical aptitude, and general reasoning skills. No question that can be solved only by calculus will be included in the test. It will be a multiple-choice test of 35 questions with a time limit of 70 minutes. Grading is computed by 4 points for a correct answer and 1 point for no answer. There are several levels of tie breaks
- Fewest wrong on the entire test wins
- Most Right on the entire test wins
- First problem wrong loses
In the event of a tie after the three levels, a fourth tie break will be used ONLY to determine first place. A series of NEW questions will be given and the winner will be determined based on the number correct AND the time it takes to hand in the questions.
Calculators
Contestants will be NOT be permitted to use any calculator.
Fees
A fee of $10.00 will be charged for each sponsor and each contestant attending the contest. The fee will cover the costs of the noon meal, printing expenses, and awards for the winners. It is recommended that contest supervisors seek payment of these fees from general school funds.
